Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about growth—not just as an entrepreneur, but as a human being. And as I’ve reflected, I’ve realized that growth, in many ways, is just like marketing.
It might sound odd at first, but stick with me—I’m going to break this down in a way that makes sense.
You see, some of the most important lessons I’ve learned as an entrepreneur have been completely counterintuitive to my natural instincts. These are lessons that, on the surface, don’t seem like they’d make any sense, but once applied, they’ve led to some of the biggest growth spurts in both my personal life and my business.
If you’re feeling stuck or like you aren’t growing as fast as you want, maybe it’s time to look at things from a different angle—one that might seem illogical at first.
This brings me to something I’ve been thinking about: growth is similar to marketing because, much like marketing, growth requires a blend of strategy, psychology, and sometimes, solutions that don’t seem to make sense on the surface. Rory Sutherland, a brilliant mind in marketing, once said that if a logical solution isn’t working, it might be time to try a psychological solution—something completely illogical that taps into human behavior.
One of my favorite examples of this is about elevators. People often complain about elevators being too slow. The logical solution? Spend millions to make the elevators faster. But a psychological solution? Add mirrors so people can stare at themselves and the wait seems shorter. No need to speed up the elevator, just shift the perception of time. Similarly, in the UK, they solved train complaints not by making trains faster, but by adding screens that showed exactly how long the wait would be. Knowing they had to wait 9 minutes was better than not knowing at all.
The lesson here? Humans are irrational, and sometimes the key to growth lies in tapping into that irrationality.
Marketing Is the Bridge Between Vision and Action
When you think about growth—whether it’s personal or business—it starts with a vision. You have a picture of where you want to be. But here’s the catch: no one else can see that vision unless you communicate it effectively. That’s where marketing comes in. Marketing takes your ideas, your goals, and your value proposition and translates them into a message that resonates with others.
Just like personal growth requires aligning your actions with your intentions, business growth requires marketing to align your vision with your audience’s needs. Without it, your growth remains an internal desire rather than an external reality.
Visibility Fuels Opportunity
You can have the best product, service, or business model in the world, but if no one knows about it, growth won’t happen. Marketing is what creates visibility, and visibility leads to opportunities.
Whether it’s through content, social media, paid ads, or word-of-mouth, the more people know about you, the more doors open. In personal growth, visibility can be likened to networking or building relationships—it’s about putting yourself out there. In business, marketing creates that visibility, ensuring that the right people see what you’re offering and take action.
Consistency in Messaging Builds Trust
Growth doesn’t come overnight. It’s the result of consistent effort, and in marketing, this means showing up regularly with a clear, authentic message. When you consistently communicate your brand’s values, mission, and offerings, you start to build trust with your audience.
People buy from brands they trust, and they’re more likely to engage with brands that feel authentic and aligned with their values. In personal development, we grow by consistently working on ourselves. In business, marketing helps build that same level of trust and commitment from others, which is essential for sustainable growth.
Marketing Helps You Adapt and Innovate
One of the most important aspects of growth is the ability to adapt. What worked yesterday might not work tomorrow, and this is especially true in both business and marketing. Marketing helps you stay in tune with your audience’s needs, preferences, and behaviors. It’s not just about broadcasting a message—it’s about listening, learning, and evolving.
As your audience shifts, your marketing strategies can shift with them, allowing you to innovate and stay relevant. Growth in business, just like personal growth, is a journey of constant learning and adaptation, and marketing is the vehicle that keeps you connected to the pulse of your audience.
Growth Requires Emotional Connection, and So Does Marketing
People don’t just buy products or services; they buy stories, emotions, and experiences. Marketing taps into this emotional connection by crafting narratives that resonate on a deeper level. When you market with authenticity and vulnerability, you build relationships with your audience that go beyond transactions. Growth, both in life and business, is driven by those emotional connections. Whether it’s sharing your brand story or delivering content that solves a problem, your marketing needs to be as much about heart as it is about strategy.
Growth Is Marketing—It’s All About Connection
Growth in business, much like personal development, is never a straight line. It’s a process of trial and error, learning what works and what doesn’t, and constantly evolving. But one thing is clear: marketing is an essential piece of that growth puzzle. It’s how you connect your vision to the world, build trust, and adapt to new opportunities.
When you approach marketing as more than just a set of tactics, but as a way to create authentic, lasting connections with your audience, the results go far beyond numbers and metrics. You’re building relationships, creating value, and laying the foundation for sustainable growth.
At the heart of it, both growth and marketing are about communicating your purpose, making your audience feel seen, and creating an emotional connection that drives real impact.
So, if you’re not growing as fast as you want, it might be time to revisit your marketing strategy—and remember, sometimes the most unexpected, counterintuitive approaches lead to the biggest breakthroughs.
