People often come to me with requests for various marketing activities. For example, SEO, blog post writing, copywriting, social media management, paid advertisements, landing pages, eBooks, and so on. I am very happy to provide these services for them.
However, while preparing to deliver on these requests, I always ask a few crucial questions:
Who is your target audience?
What is your customer lifespan?
What is your sales strategy?
What is your omni-channel marketing approach?
Identifying the Bigger Picture
When I start asking those questions, it becomes clear for both of us that they are often lacking a long-term vision and a more precise, effective strategy. For instance, if they ask me for social media marketing, it’s like going to the gym and asking a personal trainer to work on the biceps of only the right hand and expecting the rest of the body to get in shape.
When we focus solely on social media marketing and they are disappointed with the results, it’s akin to complaining that the rest of your body isn’t getting in shape after only doing bicep exercises with your trainer.
Beyond Marketing: Life's Broader Focus
This is not only about marketing. This is about where in your life you are only focusing on training your right hand biceps.
Is it your career? Is it your business?
Is it your relationships? Is it your health?
We tend to fixate on the idea that doing just one thing will get us the results we want. But the truth is, we need to see the bigger picture—a strategy for 5, 10, and 15 years—and take holistic, omnipresent, mindful, deliberate little steps every day in every aspect of our lives to get us to where we want to be.
The Challenge of Long-Term Vision
It might seem overwhelming, and very often when I coach people—and sometimes I do because they ask me for it—I ask them what their vision is for 5, 10, or 15 years. They often have no idea, and that's okay. You don't have to have the answer to that every day, all day. But taking time to reflect on it, working on yourself, and trying to collect as much data as possible to create this vision will help you get to where you want to be and create a life on your own terms.
Integrating Marketing for Better Results
And coming back to marketing, yes, social media might be an important part of your business. But if it's not congruent with your website, your email marketing, your paid advertisements, and your sales strategy, it's not going to bring you the results you're looking for.
Conclusion: Reflect and Connect
So I hope this is helpful and inspires you to reflect not only on your marketing but on your life in general. You’ve probably heard that your environment is a reflection of your inner world. And this is true.
The more you work on yourself, the better you will subconsciously guide yourself to a better version of yourself. And isn't that what we all want for ourselves? To become better every day, more successful, healthier, more prosperous, and richer in every sense of the word.
